Background of the Study
Mobile banking has emerged as a vital channel for delivering financial services in Nigeria. Ecobank Nigeria has recently upgraded its mobile banking system to enhance service reliability, streamline transactions, and meet the growing expectations of digital-savvy customers (Oluwaseun, 2023). These upgrades encompass improved user interfaces, enhanced security protocols such as biometric verification, and robust back-end integrations that ensure seamless connectivity and real-time processing. The upgraded system is designed to reduce downtime, minimize transaction errors, and provide a consistent user experience across various mobile devices (Adeniran, 2024).

By investing in mobile banking system upgrades, Ecobank Nigeria seeks to address common challenges such as app crashes, slow transaction speeds, and security vulnerabilities that have historically undermined customer trust. The enhanced system also includes features that allow customers to access personalized financial services, view real-time account information, and perform transactions with greater ease and confidence. Moreover, the bank’s commitment to continuous system improvements reflects its strategic focus on digital transformation and customer-centric innovation (Chinwe, 2025).

Despite these advancements, challenges such as network instability, device compatibility issues, and the need for continuous updates persist. These issues can affect service reliability and limit the full potential of the upgraded mobile platform. This study examines the impact of mobile banking system upgrades on service reliability at Ecobank Nigeria, aiming to evaluate the improvements achieved, identify ongoing challenges, and recommend strategies for further enhancement.

Statement of the Problem
Even after implementing significant mobile banking system upgrades, Ecobank Nigeria continues to face challenges in ensuring consistent service reliability. One major problem is the variability in network connectivity across different regions, which can result in delayed transactions and occasional system crashes (Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, compatibility issues with older mobile devices mean that a segment of the customer base may not experience the full benefits of the upgraded system. The complexity of maintaining continuous software updates and security patches also places strain on technical support resources (Nwankwo, 2024).

Furthermore, while enhanced security features have reduced fraudulent activities, occasional technical glitches and interface inconsistencies still affect user experience, leading to customer dissatisfaction. The rapid pace of technological change requires that the mobile banking platform be continuously monitored and updated, a process that can be both costly and logistically challenging. These issues, collectively, limit the bank’s ability to offer a consistently reliable mobile banking service and may undermine customer confidence in digital banking. This study aims to analyze these challenges and provide recommendations to optimize system performance and enhance overall service reliability.
